Unique Obligation Gifts for Men

The concept that a "gift" is something given voluntarily to honor someone or make a gesture of assistance with no thought of reciprocation is sometimes lost when faced with a holiday or special occasion. Our social morés have brought us to the gift of "obligation". There is the uncomfortable situation where one 'must' find the perfect gift, or appear to be ungrateful or socially gauche. This does not have to be a drudge. Make it fun. Unique obligation gifts for men can be the most challenging to find. Men don't have the same "requirements" that women do, or, rather, they don't let these be so well known. Sometimes the giver can fall into a rut, for example if he is a golfer, it becomes too easy to just find anything related to golf in the right price range and that solves the gift problem for that golfer man. How refreshingly nice for him when gears are switched and someone gives him flowers or fruit instead! The unique gift for a man is the one that breaks him out of his mold. His delight with his new gift is related to how it touches his surprise with the exploration of uncharted territory. Instead of golf gear, give him a collectible coin and a book about beginning a coin collection. Instead of a new bowling bag, give him some new hiking shoes and map to the hiking trails in a nearby park. Make it personal with a note planning your next outing together. If he's a homebody, instead of giving him a new TV guide caddy for his favorite chair, some prepaid movie theater tickets will help get him out of the house. You can offer to be there with transportation and companionship, when he's ready to go. Some obligation gifts don’t lend themselves to direct gifting of your time, but these, too, can become opportunities to break down walls. A favorite unique gift is the survival kit. Get a very small container which can be decorated with a red cross or otherwise made to look like a first aid kit. The craft store might have some tiny white metal lunch boxes that will work nicely. Then fill it with small items representing first aid for every thing bad that can happen. Write a list to include, which tells what each item represents. Inject some appropriate kindly humor like “here’s a bobby pin for unlocking ideas”, “a lucky penny for your next raise request”, “a toothpick to 'knock on wood' when needed”, and “a band-aid for your next big boo boo”. These are just some ideas to get you going. Put in some more useful items like a tin or mints or antacids and some aspirin. Your gift will be guaranteed to be the most unique and talked about that day. The key to unique gift giving is thinking outside his box. Give him something that breaks his boundaries, but make the trip for him easier, by offering to travel there with him. The greatest and most unique gift you can give is that of your time or talent.
